Ask Billboard: The ‘Bionic’ Woman
Hi Gary,
I noticed that Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” has led Dance/Electronic Albums for 75 weeks and wondered why Christina Aguilera’s “Bionic” is not on the chart. Is it because the album has ballads on it?
Thank you,
Ryan Eugenio

Hi Ryan,
The 75-week reign for “The Fame” on Dance/Electronic Albums extends a chart record. Gnarls Barkley’s “St. Elsewhere” ranks second with 39 weeks on top in 2006-07.
I posed your question to Billboard’s dance chart manager Gordon Murray, who is in charge of flagging titles for the list. Here is his response:
“In a sense, yes, the album’s number of ballads excludes ‘Bionic’ from appearing on the chart. Read the rest of this entry »
M.I.A talks about working with Christina Aguilera
The independent-minded and controversial artist teamed up with the massive popstar and her producer Switch to write the song Elastic Love- which features on Xtina’s Bionic album.
“Elastic Love was the first track I recorded actually- even before I started working on my own album,” M.I.A told us. “It’s the one I made in-between taking time out and having a baby and starting mine.”
Maya continued by comparing the song to her own recent punk rock single. said: “Born Free was the first song I wrote for my album and that’s so weird now. I look back at the time and I wrote such a nice cute song for Christina- then the next song I wrote was Born Free.”
Asked by us why she agreed to work with Aguilera the XXXO singer explained: “Other people were involved who I respect like Peaches and it was like a sea of women coming together to write this new thing. Christina had also had a baby, you know, so it was kind of an interesting situation.”
When Elastic Love leaked websites reported that it featured M.I.A- rather than just Aguilera sounding very similar. And the London born star admitted being disappointed when Christina didn’t want to do her trademark warbling in the studio.
“I really thought I was going to be able to go in there and get her vocals on to the next level and she didn’t want to do it. She was like ‘You might think that’s great because it’s not what you do, but to me I’m really bored of it.”
She added: “It’s interesting getting to work with people who can do things vocally that you cant… but yeah I only heard the song for the first time when everyone else did.”

Christina Aguilera confirms new single
Christina Aguilera has confirmed the latest single to be taken from her Bionic album, called ‘You Lost Me’.
The ballad, which has been remixed for its single release, was co-written by Australian soul-pop singer Sia Furler and is described by Aguilera on her official website as the “heart” of the album.
Reports suggest that the song may be a US-only release, with Auspop claiming that the track ‘I Hate Boys’ is being sent to Australian radio stations next week.
The website said: “Despite Christina Aguilera’s own announcement on her official website that the new single from her latest album will be ‘You Lost Me’, news comes from Sony Music locally that ‘I Hate Boys’ will be the second official Australian single release from Christina’s latest album Bionic.
“The track will be officially serviced to Australian radio on Monday next week.”

‘Bionic’ reveals the inner workings of Christina Aguilera
Bionic (* * * out of four)
Janet took control; Madonna opened her heart and got erotic. Now another icon is asserting her creative and sexual autonomy with a post-feminist manifesto on love and lust. And her name is … Christina Aguilera?
Don’t snicker just yet. Like her forebears, Aguilera, whose Bionic arrives today, has shown an affinity for adapting her persona to the winds of mass culture. On previous albums, the ex-Mouseketeer — set to make her big-screen debut this fall in Burlesque— has been a soul-savvy teen idol, a trashy tease and a born-again chanteuse.
But Aguilera never blurred the lines between cipher and chameleon as artfully as Madonna or Jackson. And since she took time off to have a baby in 2008, the field for female attention-seekers has become more crowded, with Lady Gaga now the leading proponent of blond ambition.
